I have a print out of the day that the Brexit thread didn't get a post on it.

Apparently MoMa are interested.

My lucky harmonica. Owned by grandad took it into every exam I did. Didnt play it obviously but would put it on the desk. People would look and you could hear them thinking "why's he got a harmonica?" that meant they were already behind. never have learned how to play

I worked in a country on the Mediterranean sea and would go swimming every lunchtime..the water was about 15 foot deep in places and one day,I found a Roman antiquity (9 inch high bronze statue) on the seabed..the family joke that it's a heirloom .I haven't had it valued although the British Museum were anxious to get their hands on it !

Re: Treasured possession
The DCM (Distinguished Conduct Medal) my cockney great grandad was awarded in WWI.

Prior to the "Great War" he was an apprentice footballer (I believe the term was) at West Ham. Lied about his age when war broke out to join up.

But he'd never discuss the war. Partially - we believe - because his only son was killed during WWII due to having a dickhead Captain/ Pilot on the Lancasters he was a navigator on. The dickhead would always fly lower and faster than regulations stated, overruling my great uncle throughout each and every mission. My great uncle had applied for and been accepted to transfer to weapons research (he was a maths wizz apparently), but his third-to-last mission before transfer was the one the plane never came back from. Apparently, when most of the street was celebrating VE day, he & my great grandmother stayed in with curtains closed.

When my great grandad was asked about his medal - the citation stated that when already injured he single-handedly took out a German machine gun position, killing the crew. We know he had the tip of a finger blown off. However, he always said he got the medal for "keeping my mouth shut" - the family still don't know whether he meant:

(a) this was his way of saying, I don't want to talk about it (we don't know how as a cockney he ended up in the Royal Welch Fusiliers - so maybe he joined with friends who never came back?)

(b) whether he covered for an Officer at some point. Bearing in mind he was a former footballer in the Royal Welch Fusiliers, the Regiment who played the Christmas football game (we don't know whether his part of the Regiment was there/ he partook) - but given that some Officers were executed for allowing the football match, this is also a theory in the family

(c) conceivably, a bit of both (a) and (b)?

Anyway, I was passed the DCM even though by rights it probably should have gone to my Uncle (my mum's brother). This because he always had a particular soft spot for me (also, at the time of his passing my Uncle didn't have any kids?)

And I have only very, very fond memories of visiting him.

Funny thing is, I'm really not into war/ medals in general. But this one does mean something very special to me. Probably the only heirloom that I really care about.

Besides that DCM: I do have (in storage now, assuming it's still there and not broken) one of the original 785 copies of the Industrial Records release of "The Second Annual Report of Throbbing Gristle"

Re: Treasured possession
i have loads of "treasure", but i would sell anything for the right money, sentimental value is pretty pointless really, you die, then your kids have the burden of it,
and thats how i see most of my possessions , as a burden,
like a great big boat anchor

For me my late dads leather jacket (never worn, just kept in a wardrobe) and a small answer phone tape with his voice on it. Amazing to think how different technology was even back in 2000. Haven't listened to it in years but was some comfort for months afterwards.
